Richland County EMS is hosting an Open House – Click here for details!

May 18-24, 2014 is the 40th annual EMS Week. This year’s theme is “EMS: Dedicated. For Life.”

Coming on the heels of Congress passing the Emergency Medical Services Systems Act, the first EMS Week celebrations were held when EMS was a fledgling industry. EMS practitioners were only beginning to emerge as a critical component of emergency medicine, the public health safety net and in helping to safeguard the health and well being of communities. November is National Diabetes Month

diabetesMonthNovember is National Diabetes Month. In 2010, approximately 26 million persons in the United States had diabetes, and an estimated 79 million adults had prediabetes (1). Testing for diabetes is recommended for adults with certain risk factors, including being aged ≥45 years, being overweight or obese, having a family history of diabetes or a history of gestational diabetes, and being physically inactive (2). Persons with diabetes can take steps to control the disease and prevent complications, and those with prediabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes through weight loss and physical activity (1,3). Breast Cancer Awarness Month

For the month of October, the staff at Richland County EMS will once again be donning pink shirts for breast cancer awareness.

Breast cancer is the second leading cancer in women, behind skin cancer. Usually breast cancer either begins in the cells of the lobules, which are the milk-producing glands, or the ducts, the passages that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple. Less commonly, breast cancer can begin in the stromal tissues, which include the fatty and fibrous connective tissues of the breast.

There are steps every person can take to help the body stay as healthy as possible and lower risk of breast cancer or a breast cancer recurrence such as maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and exercising regularly.

Richland County EMS would like to remind everyone of the importance of early detection, and encourage every woman to be proactive and schedule regular check-ups with their doctor.
