November is National Diabetes Month

diabetesMonthNovember is National Diabetes Month. In 2010, approximately 26 million persons in the United States had diabetes, and an estimated 79 million adults had prediabetes (1). Testing for diabetes is recommended for adults with certain risk factors, including being aged ≥45 years, being overweight or obese, having a family history of diabetes or a history of gestational diabetes, and being physically inactive (2). Persons with diabetes can take steps to control the disease and prevent complications, and those with prediabetes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes through weight loss and physical activity (1,3). Breast Cancer Awarness Month

For the month of October, the staff at Richland County EMS will once again be donning pink shirts for breast cancer awareness.

Breast cancer is the second leading cancer in women, behind skin cancer. Usually breast cancer either begins in the cells of the lobules, which are the milk-producing glands, or the ducts, the passages that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple. Less commonly, breast cancer can begin in the stromal tissues, which include the fatty and fibrous connective tissues of the breast.

There are steps every person can take to help the body stay as healthy as possible and lower risk of breast cancer or a breast cancer recurrence such as maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and exercising regularly.

Richland County EMS would like to remind everyone of the importance of early detection, and encourage every woman to be proactive and schedule regular check-ups with their doctor.

It is not a very common cancer, but a very important one, because it affects many young people – those who should be living a long and healthy life. The National Cancer Institute in the US estimates that about 63,000 individuals will be diagnosed with and 18,600 will die of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in the US in 2007. Another 8,000 individuals will be diagnosed with and 1,000 die of Hodgkin lymphoma this year. Lime green in the awareness color of Lymphoma.

UV Safety Month

The skin is the body’s largest organ. It protects against heat, sunlight, injury, and infection. Yet, some of us don’t consider the necessity of protecting our skin.

It’s just smart to take good care of your skin

The need to protect your skin from the sun has become very clear over the years, supported by several studies linking overexposure to the sun with skin cancer. The harmful ultraviolet rays from both the sun and indoor tanning “sunlamps” can cause many other complications besides skin cancer – such as eye problems, a weakened immune system, age spots, wrinkles, and leathery skin.
