Richland County EMS has partnered with Southwest Technical College to provide an EMT class in Richland Center. Classes start January 14th and will conclude May 15, 2013.
The class being offered is the entry level 180 hour EMT class. Students will attend class twice a week and the core curriculum covers topics such as anatomy/physiology, ethics, pharmacology, childbirth, ambulance operations and how to treat different types of medical emergencies and traumatic injuries.
The benefit of having class locally is shared with many of the surrounding communities. EMS squads from all over southwest Wisconsin are sending in student/candidates with the hope they will be able to add another dedicated EMT to their roster.

Volunteer OpportunitiesMany people are often surprised at just how many opportunities exist for volunteering! We count on the support of many generous individuals who are willing to share an hour, or a day, or even more out of their busy lives to extend their support.
For the month of October, the staff at Richland County EMS will once again be donning pink shirts for breast cancer awareness.
Breast cancer is the second leading cancer in women, behind skin cancer. Usually breast cancer either begins in the cells of the lobules, which are the milk-producing glands, or the ducts, the passages that drain milk from the lobules to the nipple. Less commonly, breast cancer can begin in the stromal tissues, which include the fatty and fibrous connective tissues of the breast.
There are steps every person can take to help the body stay as healthy as possible and lower risk of breast cancer or a breast cancer recurrence such as maintaining a healthy weight, not smoking, limiting alcohol, and exercising regularly.
Richland County EMS would like to remind everyone of the importance of early detection, and encourage every woman to be proactive and schedule regular check-ups with their doctor.

The Richland County Ambulance Service is happy to announce that Rachel Kerian, Andrew Winchell and Rachel Turgasen have recently passed the EMT National Registry Exam and have succesfully obtained their license as Emergency Medical Technicians.
The National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians, or N.R.E.M.T., is a non-profit organization founded in 1970 whose mission is to serve as the national EMS certification organization by providing a valid, uniform process to assess the knowledge and skills required for competent practice required by EMS professionals throughout their careers. Prior to the 1970’s, a national certification standard for emergency medical care did not exist.
In order to obtain your EMT license in the State of Wisconsin you must first complete 144 hours of course training, which is done in one college semester. Then after passing the class and your final exam you go onto take the National Registry written exam and complete 6 skill stations. Once you pass the N.R.E.M.T. exams you are eligible to apply for your state license.
It was a lot of knowledge to gain in a short time period and the testing was difficult, but with dedication and perseverance Rachel, Andrew and Rachel achieved their goal of obtaining their license and becoming EMT’S.

Richland County EMS is an IV-Tech level ambulance service in southwest Wisconsin. Staffed only by volunteers, it serves 16,000 people and runs about 1,000 calls a year.
The Richland County Ambulance Service is proud to announce that two of it’s members recently passed the EMT-Intermediate Technician program at Southwest Technical College. The members are Cheryl Dull and Heather Grimsled. We are so proud of their achievement and fortunate to have them as a part of our team. Congratulations Heather and Cheryl!
To obtain the Intermediate Technician level the candidate must first have completed the 144 hour EMT Basic class then complete an additional 90 hours, plus clinical time and pass both a written test and a series of cognitive or “hands-on” skill stations.
We are also pleased to have Elizabeth Hall as a new member of our team. Elizabeth comes to our squad as a licensed Paramedic and has nearly 4 years of EMS experience. As a licensed Paramedic, Elizabeth can operate on our squad as an Intermediate Technician. Welcome to the team Elizabeth!
